Shoebox Apartments
- has been in the news for the past few weeks and some are waiting to see whether there would be any cooling measures about it. Personally, I think it should be left to market forces and let potential buyers have a choice.
I remember when I was in my late twenties and early thirties, I wanted to stay on my own. Back then, I was staying in a room with my brother and his family. I want my own privacy and as such, I have my TV and small fridge in my room and only go out of my room only when I need to go to the bathroom.
I was working in a corporation that paid me quite well and I wish I could afford a small apartment but there were no small private apartments available within my means. I did not need much, I just needed a space bigger than my room, able to access the living room on my own, able to do simple cooking and able to bring my partner back to a loving home.
The shoebox apartments fit the bills of some individuals, such as myself during that stage of my life. Likewise, if I am a foreigner working in Singapore, I would really prefer a shoebox aparments versus a hotel room. There are certain companies who recognise this and took good opportunity to buy some shoebox apartments. I also remembered that I was given an assignment to represent Asia Pacific region in developing a new system based in the U.S. when I was with a large international company, I was living out of a hotel room for a long period. I was longing for simple Chinese food but I had no facilities to cook. Likewise, I am sure some foreigners in Singapore are in the same boat as I was.
I wish there were such things as shoebox apartment back then.
